People Share What Finally Made Their MAGA Family Members Change Their Minds – From Business Cards To Payments To ICE – and some of it is wild.

In recent months, a growing number of former Trump supporters have begun to publicly — or privately — distance themselves from the president. Their reasons vary greatly. For some, it was an ICE operation that hit too close to home. For others, it was bills, business cards, or a single sentence they wouldn’t look at. So, we gathered 21 responses from the BuzzFeed Community and Reddit about what ultimately made the difference. Here’s what they said:

1. “My ‘old school’ Republican husband voted for Trump three times. But he officially jumped ship MAGA when Trump came out with his first stupid business cards. My husband appreciates the dignity of the president, and he realized that Trump brought no dignity at all – quite the opposite. Now my husband supports my protest but has chosen not to communicate anymore about politics, because he’s very angry. He’s still a Republican but he won’t be a ‘Trumper’ anymore. Thank God.”

2. “I was a die-hard Trump supporter. My whole family is liberal and supports my views. I was with him on everything until the files came out. I can deal with a lot of his views, but sleeping with children is a long way.”

3. “He gave his wife COVID, and she died from it. It’s probably still MAGA, to be honest, but he doesn’t talk about it anymore.”

4. “It was the kidnapping of the president of Venezuela, the current occupation in Iran, and the lack of economic well-being for the people I know. That’s what ruined everything about ‘America First’ for them. They started looking back at everything and felt conflicted because they couldn’t write it, but they still felt so loyal to Trump that they couldn’t explain it – it felt right just. ‘They lied to you!’ I said.”

5. “My aunt and uncle are an out-of-vote couple in their 70s living in poverty who voted for Trump out of desperation. They were convinced by their daughters to vote for him because they were told that their financial situation would improve. Their daughters always told them at first that ‘it will get better.’ It has never been, and in fact, it has gotten worse. We are also Mexican and from Central Texas, which makes it even harder to be surrounded by so many Hispanic towns. “

7. “One of my friends voted for Trump in the last election, he believed that he was a very good choice. They realized that he was a terrible person when ICE started to take people only for the color of their skin – whether they were registered, undocumented, born in the US, etc.

8. “I wouldn’t say my mom ever had a full-on MAGA, drink-the-Kool-Aid situation, but she definitely voted for that orange ******* and sometimes she would defend him. Mostly, she keeps her mouth shut because she knows how much we all hate her. That said, everything starts to hit the fan with ICE – in particular, the murder of Renée Good – is what made her stand up so well and how Kristiem can change. it’s all about the immigration process.”

11. “I have a good friend, and for a while I put up with him and his Trump friends at a bar. Recently, he told me that he changed his mind about Trump because of Greenland. I was like, ‘Wow… is that what finally made you change your mind?’ It’s not true.”

12. “My daughter isn’t old enough to vote, but she’s been exposed to Fox News and Trump nonsense at her dad’s house. She started repeating some big red flags, so I had to deal with it. I had her watch a clip of Trump saying ‘grab ’em by the *****’ and she talked to me about how it made her feel as a young woman.

13. “ICE was the last straw for my mother. She was never a ******** MAGA, but she was very religious and very ethical. It really makes me want to cry tears of joy. My father…I’m still working on him.”

14. “My wife’s parents are big MAGA supporters. During Christmas, my mother-in-law said she was upset about Trump’s comments about the death of Rob Reiner and his wife. I usually avoid their nonsense, but I spent about 30 seconds talking about how he started his first campaign by mocking a disabled reporter and ended with Trump’s comments about ‘[grabbing women] by *****.’ I said to them, ‘But now, 10 years later, you’re upset?’ The whole day was very difficult. Shrug.”

15. “My parents voted for him in all three elections, but they don’t support him anymore, and they don’t watch Fox News now. They haven’t really changed sides – they still consider themselves conservatives – but they are ashamed of his behavior. I don’t know what finally changed their minds. For many years, I was the odd one out in the family, it was the only reason they continued to talk about religion and politics. I always seemed to be the best judge of his character.

16. “One of my former friends stopped defending him when he started talking bad about Somalis a few weeks ago – because his wife’s side is Somali. The guy himself is Haitian.

17. “Something happened during the last election that restored my little faith in people. My conservative parents – who voted for Trump the first time – told me that they voted for Harris in 2024 because they thought that Trump went too far. My father is a retired police officer and now he sees Trump as a danger to the Constitution and democracy. I was surprised. to turn against them after January 6, and some recent events in Minnesota have damaged their feelings about the system.”

18. “I allowed myself to be rational. I have one. I was wrong. I voted for him, cried when he won the first time, and defended his actions on the Internet like a good little soldier. There were things I didn’t agree with – I thought the wall was a waste of money, and I thought the withdrawal from Afghanistan was badly handled – but none of it changed my mind. my then. My eyes slowly opened, and I regret that I was deceived as I thought, and honestly, I deserve it.”

19. “My MAGA cousin deleted 10 years of pro-Trump posts on Facebook after Renée Good was killed. She made a post saying she was deleting Facebook and creating a new account just for family and friends. However, she is an artist, and her old account was under her stage name. I doubt she will come back with a new stage name so she can separate herself from from his later followers or writing his later name and his writing because of his later followers or his writing. to make the debts he had before, when he identified himself as a liberal.”

20. “My whole family is decent – me, my partner, my brothers, basically everyone. I didn’t vote for Trump because I always thought he was rude and divisive. He made fun of someone with a disability and said horrible things about women.’ My mother was an avid supporter of flags, shirts and hats. Surprisingly, Candace Trump completely changed her mind. My aunt voted for Kamala in the last election.

21. “I’ve been working for my neighbor for five years. Often, it felt like I was banging my head against the wall, but every now and then, I saw cracks. Yesterday I sent him some videos and asked him to do me a favor: ‘Work all day watching videos without commentary before Fox News tells you what to think.’ He called me the next morning and said, ‘That representative should be put in prison for the rest of his life. Trump needs to stop this.’ We are getting there. I’ve cut off a lot of people, and I’m surprised I lasted this long. But he’s reaching out and asking things like, ‘Fox is saying this, is it true?’

Recently, he said something like, ‘People in power and the rich are trying to make us hate.’ I almost told him he was quoting Bernie Sanders, but he wasn’t ready for that. At this point, I’m totally invested in seeing this through. It’s like watching a father cheer on his 40-year-old child who takes his first step. “
