A new study shows that although wealth is limited, the gap between average income and wealth remains alarming.
Amid rising unemployment and inflation, it’s hard for many Americans to get ahead, let alone get rich, although the definition of the last dollar varies widely across the country.
Of course, what makes you a fat cat in Kentucky might mean middle class in Massachusetts.
MoneyLion used data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ 2024 American Community Survey to arrive at its findings, to determine household incomes and upper income limits for each state.
In Mississippi, the income of the top 5% is $351,488, almost half of what is needed to be considered wealthy in New York.
Although the income of a rich person varies from country to country, the wealth gap remains stable.
In Connecticut, which tops the nation in income needed to be a high earner, the income of the top 5% is a staggering 7 times the median income.
Even in West Virginia, which is the lowest level for the dollar amount needed to be wealthy, the number, $345,740, is still almost 6 times higher than the median income of $60,798.
MoneyLion’s findings come after two other shocking studies published last year that revealed how much it costs to live in the US and New York in particular.

A family of four living in New York state needs to make a staggering $276,973 a year to live comfortably, a SmartAsset study from last June found.
